4.   Next Meeting

The next meeting was set for Tuesday April 29, 2014 at 8:00 PM.

Agenda Items:

5.   Community Engagement - Presented by Dov Berger-Cooper

Dov spoke of the need to engage new volunteers and reminded the Executive Committee that this benefits both the individuals and the community, allowing for the formation of new social connections. He identified some of the barriers to recruiting new volunteers as language barriers and the perception or reality of closed groups which exist within the Kehillat Yedidya community. The aim of the proposed community engagement committee is to break down new volunteer opportunities into small chunks which new volunteers will be able to manage and the creation of new groups if existing groups are not welcoming of new members.

The Executive Committee discussed ideas of how to reach and engage new volunteers:

a)      The Executive Committee could divide up the membership list and be in touch with potential new volunteers.

b)      Target a list of new members who have joined within the last three years.

c)       Hold an "engagement fair" in which various committees explain their purpose and activities to potential new members

d)      Putting together an alternate Purim shpiel troupe?

e)      The education committee needs to be revitalized and work in parallel to the social committee to plan events which engage more members.

A  proposal to create a Community Engagement Committee with a mandate of identifying communal needs for volunteer involvement was passed by the Executive Committee. This effort will involve broad outreach to the community-at-large and target outreach to individual members perceived to be a good fit for specific communal needs.

6.           Tav Hevrati - Presented by Randi Garber

a.       Randi Garber introduced a new initiative for social justice:

Kehillat Kol Haneshama has invited Kehillat Yedidya to participate in a project focusing on the needs of asylum seekers. They are looking to build a data base of professionals who are willing to donate their skills to help asylum seekers and people to donate their time to accompany these individuals to various appointments. No budget has yet been proposed for this project. A 1000 NIS budget is already in place for the social action committee.

Randi suggesting kicking off the project with an awareness campaign beginning in the month of Nissan and including divrei torah and a call for sharing of Pesach seder ideas in the Kehillat Yedidya Facebook group (Kehillat Kol Haneshama has staff to help with this). She asked for help and support in organising divrei torah in support of this theme and for an Executive Committee letter or post on Facebook asking Kehillat Yedidya members to participate in the initiative.

b.    As an offshoot to this project, interest in restarting the inter-congregational committee was expressed. This included the possibility of uniting with other South Jerusalem organizations in order to have a stronger voice.

c.     Proposal of an additional project: "religion is not an obstacle to peace". This might include archeologists and tour guides leading interfaith groups to sites of common interest while seeking non-political ways to guide at controversial sites.

d.    Randi also talked about Kehillat Yedidya building a relationship with Enosh, the Israel Mental Health Association.  She introduced a plan of organizing meetings in the park, including children and parents.

7.           Kabbalat Shabbat Survey

The Kabbalat Shabbat survey will be sent to the KY members on Thursday March 20, 2014 and be open to receive responses for ten days.

8.           Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue

The Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue which meets once a month on Shabbat morning in the Rova is exploring the possibility of adding a Kabbalat Shabbat service. They are interested in renting space in Baka once a month and approached Kehillat Yedidya to see if they could rent space in the Kehillat Yedidya building.

The Executive Committee raised the possibility that there may be potential conflicts if members would like to use the space but agreed to investigate the possibility of renting to the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue.

9.           Entrance Level Aron Kodesh

It is important to the Executive Committee to find a solution which will allow for storing torahs on the ground floor in the aron kodesh. Miriam Fine is investigating the possible solutions to this problem.

10.        Office Staff

The question of whether office staff should be asked or required to attend Executive Committee meetings was raised. The Executive Committee agreed that there was no need for a general requirement and that it instead depends on the agenda items being discussed at each particular meeting.

11.        Decisions Made Via Online Discussion Since the Previous Meeting

a.     The Executive Committee approved an additional expense of up to 400NIS for the Pete Seeger memorial sing-along. This money is expected to be recovered at the "box office" at the time of the event.
