SUMMARY OF THE APRIL 29, 2014 MEETING

OF THE KEHILLAT YEDIDYA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Participants:

Executive committee members: Linda Gradstein (chairperson), Bruce Rosen (chairperson of meeting), Kobi Abelman, Gary Ginsberg, David Gleicher, Donna Goldberg, Adina Golombek, Josh Margo, Avital Ordan, Daniel Rohrlich

Audit committee member: Josh Schoffman

Guest(s): Aytan Kadden, representing the Va'ad Minhag V'Halacha, all of whom were present

Observers: approximately 30 members attended, to observe and offer input

Pre-Meeting Opening:

The meeting was opened by Alden Solovy, who read a prayer from his recently published collection.

Agenda Items:

1.   Presentation of the Va'adat Minhag V'Halacha (VMH) on the Community Survey and the Committee's Proposal

Aytan Kadden began with a dvar torah and a statement of principles. He explained that the VMH had concluded that it is halchikally permissible for a woman to lead Kabbalat Shabbat. The concerns with a woman leading Kabbalat Shabbat are sociological in nature and so the VMH felt it was important to hear the voices of the community.

Aytan described the VMH process for considering the issue and presenting it to the community. This is described in the protocols of the VMH.

Aytan went on to describe the results of the survey of the membership on changes to Kabbalat Shabbat and to explain how the VMH had arrived at their proposal to the  Executive Committee (click to view).

The VMH felt that it was important that their proposal reflect the significant numbers of people both for a change in the format of Kabbalat Shabbat and for maintaining the status quo on this issue. The VMH also struggled with how to relate to the significant number of neutral voices.

The VMH emphasized the importance of community building and shied away from defining the issue in terms of winners and losers. They sought to represent the diversity within the Kehillat Yedidya community.

2.   Questions and Comments from the Executive Committee, Answered by the VMH

Questions:

a.       Please address some of the practical considerations of this proposal.

b.      How did you arrive at the frequency of woman-led Kabbalat Shabbat which you propose?

c.       How do you relate to the neutral responses on the survey?

d.      Are you proposing a fixed or a flexible schedule for the trial period?

e.      What is the process for determining what will happen after the trial period?

f.        Why is this the VMH proposal rather than Daniel Rohrlich's proposal of woman-led Kabbalat Shabbat in honour of smachot?

Answers:

a.       The VMH envisions that mincha will be held upstairs with both groups together. The male-led and female-led groups would split after this to each do Kabbalat Shabbat separately. A decision needs to be made to determine what will happen in the event that one of the groups does not have a minyan of men. Whether to reconvene for ma'ariv together was discussed but no decision reached. Visiting groups would be hosted upstairs but the Kabbalat Shabbat schedule would need to be arranged to ensure that Chrisitian and other interfaith groups do not visit on weeks when Kabbalat Shabbat is led by a woman. The VMH does not have projections for attendance numbers and feels these predictions are especially hard to make given the number of "neutral" members and the number of non-members who attend Kabbalat Shabbat. The VMH emphasized that while they would have preferred that the results of the survey provide more clear answers, they feel their proposal is balanced and makes an effort to avoid disenfranchising large groups of members.

b.      While the survey did indicate that Kabbalat Shabbat would not be led by a woman every week, the VMH felt that there was a need to propose a schedule of dates to ensure that the decision not be a theoretical vote to allow women to lead Kabbalat Shabbat which does not take place in practice.

c.       The VMH pointed out that the neutral members did not voice unified opinions on the rest of the survey questions. Mindy pointed out that the results were analysed by breaking down how the neutral group related to each question. The VMH analysed the results both including and excluding the neutral group.

d.      The VMH is proposing a fixed schedule in order to try out each of the two proposed options a total of six times. After a lengthy debate, they feel it is important to allow for a long trial period.

e.      The VMH does not recommend a survey or vote of the entire community after the trial period.

3.   Questions and Comments from the Membership, Answered by the VMH

Questions:

a.       Many of the people who attend Kabbalat Shabbat are not members. How will we let them know of this change in policy and of when a woman will be leading Kabbalat Shabbat?

b.      How does this proposal affect the fabric of the community and how we view halacha?

c.       How will we prevent children in the hallway from disturbing, especially if we are having services both upstairs and on the ground floor?

d.      Will there be auditions or a vetting process for choosing leaders? This is an opportunity to review hilchot tefilla. Was this discussed?

e.      Can we use the splitting up for kriyat nashim as a guide for dividing into two services?

f.        If we've determined that it is halachically permissible for a woman to lead Kabbalat Shabbat why don't we allow it unconditionally?

g.       In the winter, can the two groups join back together for ma'ariv?

h.      If one of the groups does not have a minyan at the time to start Kabbalat Shabbat , doesn't this indicate this minyan is unsuccessful? Should they wait for a while until a minyan arrives?

Answers:

a.       The greeters could inform people about woman-led Kabbalat Shabbat on any given week and/or ushers could be put in place in each service. Aytan took this opportunity to point out that this question may also hint at where Kehillat Yedidya stands in the broader Orthodox community. He stated that the decision was made based on what was perceived to be right for the members of the Kehillat Yedidya community.

b.      The fact that the process has been lengthy is because it has examined the question in depth and from many perspectives. Kehillat Yedidya is taking this decision very seriously.

c.       Indeed, it will be a challenge to have two spaces for tefilla. The VMH encourages parents to have children sit with them in one of the two services.

d.      Gabaim and gabayot will choose and evaluate the leaders of Kabbalat Shabbat. It is a good idea to take this opportunity to review hilchot tefilla with the community.

e.      The VMH did not feel it would be appropriate for the Kehillat Yedidya community as a whole to suggest having a woman lead Kabbalat Shabbat every week.

f.        The VMH is undecided about whether to join the two tefillot back together for ma'ariv and did not address this in their recommendation.

4.   Response from the Executive Committee:

A variety of opinions were expressed by the members of the Executive Committee, including:

a.       Kehillat Yedidya occupies a unique niche among the communities in the neighbourhood. We should be careful to maintain our uniqueness and market ourselves accordingly.

b.      Kehillat Yedidya will be unique even if changes are made to Kabbalat Shabbat.

c.       Two services will be two weaker services.

d.      The community will not be unified if there are two parallel services.

e.      We need to try out the possibilities and see what happens.

f.        Two services will ask members to "vote with their feet" each time and the community will pay a price for this ongoing divisiveness.

g.       We can't ignore 50% of the membership who are asking for changes but must not exclude the significant minority who do not want changes and so we must offer two services.

h.      We should consider whether making changes will draw new members or cause members to leave. The timing may not be right for this change.

i.         There should be no preset frequency for woman-led Kabbalat Shabbat.

j.        The community expressed the most support for allowing families to celebrate a simcha with a private woman-led Kabbalat Shabbat. Let's go slowly and offer only this change as a first step.

k.       A set frequency and schedule for woman-led Kabbalat Shabbat allows us to announce these events clearly and in advance.

The meeting was concluded with a reminder that the Executive Committee is taking this decision very seriously. The issue has not been decided yet and the Executive Committee is still open to other suggestions.

5.   Decisions Made Via Online Discussion Since the Previous Meeting:

a.       The Executive Committee approved a request from the Library Committee for an additional budget of 2356 NIS in order to allow for purchase of books at a discount. It is expected that some of this money will be recovered through book donations to the library.
